Share on Facebook | Online Version Principal yanks patriotic song from kindergarten graduation June 13, 2014 Ronald, A New York City principal has banned her schools pre-kindergarten class from singing Stand Up For the Red, White, and Blue at their graduation ceremony next week, according to National Review Online. This is the second patriotic song that the principal, Greta Hawkins of Edna Cohen School (PS 90), has barred from a school celebration. When the class of four-year-olds was rehearsing the song in their auditorium and waving mini American flags, Hawkins halted the rehearsal and scolded the teachers, saying, You didnt ask permission to do it. The flags were also banned, as they were unapproved materials, she said. In 2012, the principal banned the singing of God Bless the USA, reportedly telling teachers that it may offend other cultures. This past September, she also eliminated the daily singing of America the Beautiful. The Department of Education reprimanded Hawkins and sent her to sensitivity training after investigators from the DOEs Office of Equal Opportunity found that Hawkins made offensive racial remarks at a June 2010 faculty meeting.
