[Shared from Haligonia.ca on Facebook] 10:47 AM AST Tuesday 23 December 2014 Special weather statement in effect for: Halifax Metro and Halifax County West Freezing rain or freezing drizzle possible tonight, followed rain, wind and mild temperatures expected for Christmas Day. An intense weather system will affect the Maritimes on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Prior to this, however, a weak weather system sliding across the province today will give light flurries or showers to parts of the western mainland today, with this precipitation possibly changing to a period of freezing rain or freezing drizzle this evening and overnight over the valley and inland sections of the mainland. Periods of rain will develop during the day Wednesday then become more steady and heavier later on Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day accompanied by strong southerly winds and very mild temperatures. Current indications suggest that rainfall amounts and wind strength could potentially reach warning criteria on Thursday. Additionally...A higher cycle of tides this week combined with strong onshore winds could give elevated coastal water levels and high waves. This will be closely monitored in the event warnings are required. Environment Canada will continue to monitor the development of this system providing updates as new information becomes available. Those planning travel or other weather-sensitive activities for later in the week are advised to monitor future forecasts for further information. Please monitor the latest forecasts and warnings from Environment Canada at weatheroffice.gc.ca. Source: Release
