“She scored 92% in her tenth board exams!” Mr.Sandhu, proudly told me. Mr.Sandhu is my neighbour and lives with his wife and his daughter, Ria who just passed her tenth, and with as mentioned by him, with 92 percent. He was having a drink with me, actually giving me a treat for his daughter’s success. She was his only daughter and he was very glad she has performed so well. “95 in maths, 91 in science!” he laughed hard telling me this. He was getting high and emotions were eagerly coming out. “Kids these days. That day isn’t far enough when students are going to come up with 100% in everything. Inch perfect”, he said after he finished his 3rd peg. “Indeed”, I took a sip and asked the main question, the question every Indian parent has to answer the society whenever some wonder kid performs well, and that said, “So engineer or a doctor? “, I smiled. He looked straight at me with a weird expression. I knew I was wrong on this part. I knew I was being stereotype just like our society which I envy the most. But I thought it would be a practical option to suggest these to some parent for their child, actually, I didn’t want to make a fool out of me giving lectures on following and achieving one’s dream to a drunk excited man. But something very interesting was coming up, which I had no idea would encounter me. He took the bottle and put it back in closet, meaning the end of our drinking session, and calmly came closer to me and took out his phone and showed me a video. It was Ria only, mimicking some TV anchor. I laughed at how cute she looked while anchoring news reports. Video ended and I was quite impressed. She was good at it. I asked him the reason behind this video. “She wants to be a TV anchor”, he calmly said. “Yeah she is, but she is way too good in maths and science, she would do great in these fields”, I applauded her. “But I am a father and I know what lies in her brain and what in her heart. And I feel her heart is one part that’ll never disappoint her in future, no matter if she makes it or not, and this bloody brain wanders all the time. I want my daughter to fulfil her dreams, be a TV anchor as she likes it. After all who doesn’t want to see his daughter on national TV”, he winked at me and stood up to leave. ~ Inside IIT
