[Singapore Heritage Alpha-bits] (B)otanic Gardens In 1822, - TopicsExpress

[Singapore Heritage Alpha-bits] (B)otanic Gardens In 1822, Sir Stamford Raffles planted a botanical garden on Government Hill, with plans to introduce economic crops such as cocoa and nutmeg. However, lacking funding and a full-time director, the garden closed seven years later. It was re-established at its present site in 1859 on land still infested with tigers, as a park for members only. Over a decade later, gardens was taken over by the government as one in a chain of British colonial gardens that circled the globe. Its mission was botanical exploration, documentation, experimentation and research – a continuing role of the gardens today. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is also a community park and tourist destination. A unique and significant place in our economy and natural heritage over the last century, the Gardens was nominated for a UNESCO World Heritage Site this year – a first for our nation. (Good Luck!)
