‘Social Justice Bench’ to Function from December 12, 2014 After Justice HL Dattu said that the case on missing children hurt him the most and he “felt the need for a bench to hear such cases,” an unprecedented special “Social Justice Bench” was set up by the Supreme Court on Wednesday. The Bench will be headed by Two Judges, which will exclusively look into cases regarding social issues related to women and children such as women’s safety, malnutrition in children, etc. Since many years, cases related to social justice are pending in the courts. Justice Dattu said, “This is a first step and let us start. People of this Country should feel we are with them and this Court gives time to them.” As per a press release issued by the Court, it said, “In Supreme Court several cases relating to the domain of social justice are pending for several years. Chief Justice of India is of the view that these cases shall be given a specialised approach for their early disposal so that the masses will realise the fruits of the rights provided to them by the constitutional text.” It said, “In this perspective His Lordship has ordered constitution of special Bench titled as ‘Social Justice Bench’ to deal specially with the matters relating to society and its members, to secure social justice, one of the ideals of the Indian Constitution.” Meanwhile, the Bench is scheduled to assemble every Friday afternoon from December 12, Friday and will be headed by Justices Madan B Lokur and UU Lalit. According to the release, the Court would take measures to prevent untimely death of women and children for want of nutritious food, providing hygienic meal besides issues relating to children to provide night shelter to destitute and homeless, to provide medical facilities to all the citizens irrespective of their economic condition, to provide hygienic drinking water, to provide safety and secure living condition for the fair gender who are forced into prostitution. The release has also mentioned the above as some of the areas where the Constitution mechanism has to play a proactive role in order to meet the goals of the Constitution. However, the decision has been taken by the Justice while he came across a petition filed by Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi on missing children across the country.
