"Sometimes we need to write something that will not go into our final, finished piece of writing, in order to get — so to speak — to the writing that will eventually circulate to readers." For a long time, regardless of the eventual length of the piece I was writing, I had to write 5-7 pages to arrive at the place that eventually would become the start of my essay, much like what Nathan is saying here about his own process. Accepting that those first several pages were going to be cut made it much easier for me to start writing, build some momentum, and get to the point where I needed to be to start the actual essay. And while that is a form of inefficiency in the sense of wasted pages--the time I saved by not agonizing over where to start probably made me a better writer... Also? Blogging. :) Read more: insidehighered/advice/2013/08/19/essay-importance-writing-may-never-be-published
