* Students Help Improve Their Local Space * Our Year 8 project based learning (PBL) theme for this half-term is Space. As part of this, we decided to look at local space provided by the council in Swanage. Students carried out research into 8 recreational facilities and we then went on a walk to visit 4 of the sites - King George’s Field, Northbrook Copse, Beach Gardens and the Recreation Ground. Once back at school students worked in teams of 3-5 to decide how their local space could be better used or improved. Students had 3 lessons and home learning time to develop their concept and then each class chose the groups whose presentations were the best. On Tuesday the finalists presented their ideas in front of a panel including the Mayor of Swanage, Cllr Alison Patrick, and the Town Clerk, Dr Martin Ayres. It was a daunting task for some, but they all did fantastically. In third place was the Land Train Group who had the ingenious idea of bringing a seaside land train to Swanage. This would bring in revenue from tourists and we had no doubt would be incredibly popular. Well done to Alfie Moyler, Ajay Squibb & Jenn Blackman. In second place was a group who wanted to improve Northbrook Copse – they had lots of ideas such as adding a pond, tyre swings and a small nature trail. Well done to Matthew Dunster, Michelle Cross, Freya Joynes & Neve Dyer. The winning group highlighted the need for an all-weather track for athletes to train on in Swanage, with many of our students currently travelling to Bournemouth in order to train and compete. The group gave a convincing presentation and The Mayor promised that the council would mark out a running track at Days Park by next Easter. How amazing that this came from one of our ideas! Huge congratulations to Padraig Taylor, Jodie Stannard, Corey Furmage & Leah Wellman. In conclusion, the council representatives were very impressed and they will consider how they might implement some of the other ideas as well. It was a really successful event and a proud moment for our new school – well done to all students in Year 8 for all of their hard work.
