The 30-year-old Iranian documentarist, identified as Esmail Heidari, was slain by the operatives of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front in a suburb of Damascus on Wednesday afternoon, ISNA reported on Friday. His death came a day after al-Nusra militants killed Iranian journalist and filmmaker Hadi Baghbani on the outskirts of the capital. Baghbani had traveled to Syria to shoot a documentary about the ongoing crisis in the country. In September 2012, Press TV correspondent Maya Nasser was killed by a sniper while reporting on air in Damascus. Hossein Mortada, who serves as the Damascus bureau chief for two Iranian networks, the English-language Press TV and the Arabic-language Al-Alam, was injured in the September attack. The two journalists were covering the aftermath of a twin bombing that had targeted a military complex in Damascus. Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions of others displaced in the violence.
