(TALK BACK) KNOW YOUR BASS PLAYER OP ED: Oft times in my work with acoustic centered artists in roots, blues, Americana, folk, and permutations thereof - producers shudder when I propose the 5-string (low B) bass! In the proper hands, this remarkable instrument brings fresh, new dimensions to a composition. To my ears, the 5 continues the pioneering template set by Dylan, Miles, Joni, Pat Metheny, and Simon & Garfunkel, among others, who initially dared convention and introduced the electric bass onto the acoustic scene amid much criticism. By doing so all those years ago, these bold artists and their equally visionary bassists expanded the ever evolving language of popular music via their foresight and sense of artistic adventure and freedom. So, why fear the 5? Check out bassist Kevin McCormick in-the-pocket with a 5 -string on Jackson Browne’s riveting “Never Stop” from The Naked Ride Home (2002).
