*TELEPHONIC CONVERSATION* “ Got to hear from aunt, that you have been pulling off one night out after another. That’s really nice. Only 4 more months left for your boards and subsequent entrance exams . Keep up this tempo. I know you will surely come out with flying colours.” “Problem is, I did not study even a single line from a single book in those 2 night-outs. Actually I was busy repairing a friend’s laptop. You know I opened the entire laptop , changed the motherboard . My friend was really glad that I did it for him as the same would have cost him a lot money and precious time. But when I told this to dad, he scolded me like anything and said that doing all such stuffs will not take me a long way ? U know that I don’t have a good enough CGPA in class 10. I don’t feel like studying these days. That may possibly affect my class 12 percentage and then the JEE Mains and other exam marks too. Is life all about those 2 ,3 ,4 or maybe 5 digit numbers only ? I love to search about the recent developments in the various OS, how to hack into someone’s bank account and all those stuffs. You already know about my love and passion for the coding language C++ . Just two weeks back I worked my way through the motherboard’s circuit of a HP laptop and fixed it properly. This took me close to 45 minutes but the pleasure I got after fixing it up was simply inexplicable. Needless to say it was much more than solving a DPP of Organic Chemistry. And yesterday and day-before yesterday I was busy downloading the technical version of WINDOWS 10 and comparing its pros and cons of the pre-existing windows 7,8,8.1. ( After this he explained me a few important terms related to the working of an OS very enthusiastically , of which I could not make much sense). I feel that all this is related to engineering only and perhaps one of the most practical aspects of learning and exploring the circuit too. Now when I am trying to learn and experiment with their mechanisms by going into the details, my parents are tagging me off as a “COMPUTER REPAIR WALA”. Why do they consider this job so undignified when they themselves are willing to spend thousands and thousands of money on repairing their laptops and desktops? Why isn’t “PRACTICABILITY” respected by our elders and the education system bhaiya ?“ “See , what you are saying is very true. The pathetic part is , I feel you are tailor-made for branches like ECE or Electrical or CS , but for this you need to have very high marks in any entrance exam, be it JEE MAINS OR JEE ADVANCED. I am very much aware of your aversion towards chemistry , but at this point of time all I can say is.. P,C,M only will be deciding your future. For the law-makers of our education system ,excelling in the NUMBER GAME is the first and foremost thing. Everything else , ( passion and dedication in your case) comes second , or maybe third or even a bit lower in the list “ “I know this bhaiya…and this depresses me a lot. Anyways have my tuition now , got to go bhaiya “ “Bye and All the very best for your upcoming days” “Yeah , only “BEST WISHES and PRAYERS” can save me now !! “ and he hastily cut me off in disgust. !! ~Tapobrata Behera, IIT Kharagpur
