“THE CURE FOR A TROUBLED HEART” You may be among the millions who have searched endlessly, exhausting every possible avenue in a quest for peace and happiness only to find that it eludes you at every turn. Time and again you come up empty. In fact, every person who has ever sought peace and happiness outside of Christ has failed in their attempt. Why? Because the Cross alone is the one and ONLY path that leads a person directly to that which the human heart seeks - Peace! Total peace through Jesus Christ from the worries and cares of this life. Only when we place our complete faith and trust solely in the work of Christ upon the Cross do we discover the true meaning of life. Then, and only then, are our sins washed away and the hope of Heaven becomes a very real and tangible thing, A peace like we have never known before dwells within the heart. A peace that passes all understanding. Unless we are willing to go to the Cross of Jesus Christ with a contrite heart and surrender ourselves over completely to Him the Bible says that we are merely walking dead men. Scripture clearly states that a man without Christ is a dead man, “dead in trespasses and sin,” dead to happiness, dead to hope. Yet there exists a perfect remedy. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” From this one scripture verse shines forth God’s incredible and amazing love for you and me. In it we see a sinful world that has separated itself from God and yet His love for us never changes. A fact demonstrated by the greatest gift ever given, the gift of eternal life with God through the selfless sacrifice of His One and only Son upon the Cross. As Jesus talked with Nicodemus He told him that God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but to SAVE the world. Of God’s love Paul said, “no one can measure the height and depth and width and breadth of God’s incredible Love for us.” Still, the final decision rests entirely in your hands. You can accept Christ and be forgiven of your sins by going to the Cross in repentance and allowing the atoning blood of Jesus Christ to cleanse you, (the Bible says that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from ALL sin not just certain sins but ALL sin), or, you can reject Christ. No matter who you are, no matter how rich or poor you are, no matter the color of your skin, the heart of every person ultimately longs for a power greater than themselves, a power that can lift us up when we are at our lowest, a power that can help us when we are helpless, a power that can comfort us when we are hurting. In the stillness of the night when we sit all alone, the human heart cries out for a peace that only God can provide. Peace with God is not something that can be earned. Nor is it possible to ever be “good” enough to merit salvation. It is a gift of God. But know this, there is no value whatsoever for you in the atoning blood of Jesus Christ unless you are willing to receive it by asking Him into your heart as your personal Lord and Saviour. Our sins are atoned for ONLY when by faith we accept what Christ did for us on the Cross. If there is no repentance then there can be no pardon. Have you repented of your sin and invited Jesus Christ into your heart? In just a moment I’m going to give you the opportunity tonight to take that step of faith. The hearts and souls of those who encounter the love of Jesus Christ are changed forever. Paul had it all, a great job, he had lots of respect and power - so what was that “something” that made him throw it all away without a single thought or care and at the same time be HAPPY about it? That “something,” was an encounter with Jesus Christ, an encounter that caused Paul to change direction, to take his eyes off the things of the world and set his sights on the things of eternity. Paul chose a brand new path. You can choose that same path tonight. The world says that it doesn’t matter what you believe just as long as you are sincere, but Jesus said there is only ONE way to God and that way is through the Cross of Christ. No matter the sins you have committed, no matter the life you have lived it’s still not too late to have your sin debt paid in full. Don’t ever feel that you’re not worth loving or that you are not worth saving. Don’t feel that you are “too bad” to be saved. There is no such thing as being so bad that the atoning blood of Christ is unable to cover the price for your sin. The atoning blood of Jesus Christ can set even the vilest sinner free from the chains that bind him. But remember this, there can also be a time when it is “too late” to be saved. Don’t let this moment pass you by. You can have the assurance of Heaven tonight by opening your heart to Christ and trusting in Him as your personal Lord and Saviour. The stage is set. Christ could literally return at any moment. Are ready for that moment? You can be simply by asking Jesus Christ into your heart. All you need to do is go to God in prayer and say “Lord, I know that I am a sinner, I confess my sins and I ask your forgiveness of my sins. I ask you to come into my heart and take complete control of my life. Give me strength to follow you and live for you every day. Remake me and mold me into the person that you want me to be. Thank you for dying on the Cross in my place. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name I pray - Amen” (*The preceding article was excerpted from a sermon delivered by Mark Shutts in Boyertown, PA.)
