It is a day created to honor and celebrate your brother(s) and/or your sister(s). In the United States, 79% of all children have siblings while growing up. 2014 marks the 15th year that National Siblings Day has been celebrated. In 1997, the organization was incorporated and in 1999 it achieved a non-profit status. Since 1998, over 40 states have officially issued proclamations to recoginze Siblings Day in their state. On April 6, 2005, U.S. Representative Carolyn Maloney for New York’s 12th congressional district, officially saluted the holiday and introduced it into the official Congressional Record of the United States Congress. National Siblings Day is an “unofficial” national holiday.
