‘TWAS THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS By Harvey Faust (With apologies to CLEMENT MOORE or HENRY LIVINGSTON which ever wrote the original) ‘Twas the day after Christmas in our Olive Branch House The only person stirring was my wife Barbara Faust. She had been up since five cleaning the floor; Piled high with wrapping, boxes, and a whole lot more. But I lay sleeping, so warm in my bed, The covers and sheet pulled over my head. When the bedroom door was flung opened wide, And a very angry woman stormed inside. Laying a golf club along aside my head, She said, “Get up or you soon will be dead.” So I sprang out of bed, my mind still foggy, And I staggered to the kitchen, my legs a bit wobbly. A quick cup of coffee, oh, my, how tasty, My heart started pumping, the blood flowed hasty. Then I went right to work, I removed all the trash; I straighten up the house as quick as a flash. Then I sat down with a sigh deep and free, And took one last look at that decorated tree. When what to my bloodshot eyes did I see, One unopened package remained under the tree. My heart just stopped, my mind tried to remember, Who did we forget on the 25th of December? The package was small, but beautifully wrapped. The paper was silver with gold ribbon all about. I quickly called Barbara to hunt up her list, I needed to know whose Christmas we missed. We picked up the package and both read the names; Then looked at each other and we were suddenly ashamed. For there on the gift in script every so nice; Were the names Harvey and Barbara from your Lord, Jesus Christ. As our shaking hands the package we unwrapped, We cried out with gladness as the contents poured out. There was His mercy and grace; there was His love, Given to us from the One up above. There was also a note from Jesus written with care; It read, “Take these gifts and with your friends please share. For my mercy and grace is in no short supply, And my love for you all will surely not die. Your Father in heaven sends you this Christmas cheer, Remember its Christmas every day of the year.” So on this day after Christmas, let’s all give a shout, “Thank you, Lord Jesus, you’re what Christmas is about.” And as we take down the tree and pack decorations away, Let’s take a few minutes to bow our heads and pray. Let’s pray for peace; let’s pray for our brothers; Let’s forgive our enemies and love one another. But most of all, let’s give thanks to the Lord of Host, For He is the One whom we owe the most. He has given us life. He saved us from sins, Let us remember that as the New Year begins. Yes, tis the day after Christmas, order is restored; Because Christ is now with us and will be evermore.
