. . . .That your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus - TopicsExpress

. . . .That your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again. (Philippians 1:26) Is it wrong to be proud? We can get to the answer of that question by a clearer translation of the Greek meaning of our text for today. What is suggested is, “In order that your pride in me may abound in Christ Jesus.” The Philippians were proud of Paul, and he made no effort to conceal his pride for them. Yet, with a gentle reminder, he brings them back to the source of their relationship in the Master and not each other. If he is able to come to them, it will be because the Lord has made it possible. Elsewhere, in Romans 11:20, Paul gives the formula for creative pride – “Do not become proud, but stand in awe” (RSV). There is a kind of pride that comes from thinking that what we have or are is our own accomplishment, and a kind of pride that comes from an awesome realization that Christ alone is the source of our strength. Without Christ Paul could do nothing of any value. Nor can we! When we recognize God’s gifts in us or the people we love or the things we do, then there is a deep sense of gratitude that issues in creative pride.
