“That’s All Right” Tuesday morning dawns across the WPAC - TopicsExpress

“That’s All Right” Tuesday morning dawns across the WPAC region as warm, moist air settles over the south, and there are hints of old news transforming into new issues as a strong winter storm forms for residents of Japan later this week. NORTH The northern third of the WPAC is still locked in winter’s icy grip this morning, and there appears to be a potent winter storm shaping up for Japan later this week. Chilly air remains over the northern portion of the region as residents of Beijing wake up north of a cold air layer boundary, rising to a frigid low of -6C/21F this morning. Seoul is also north of this stationary boundary and starting the day at a bone-chilling -5C/23F. To the south and east, the air is quite a bit warmer with Shanghai checking in with a low temperature of 7C/45F, and Tokyo residents rising to the morning sun and a temperature of 8C/47F. Change is in the air for Japan this week, as the remnants of 01W MEKKHALA join forces with a potent air mass moving in from the west, and form a significant winter storm system that will bring rain, snow, and windy conditions to areas already impacted by heavy winter weather the past week. The effects of the storm are still to be determined due to several factors, mostly involving location. From Western Pacific Weather’s meteorologist Robert Speta: “Starting on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning what is left of Mekkhala will start to re-gather strength with the westerlies as it nears the southern Japanese islands. Here it will bring scattered showers in Naha through the day on Wednesday before combining with the East China low and tracking North East.” “The big question is how strong will it get and how close to the coast will it be. The closer to the coast, the stronger winds will be for those in Kanagawa and Chiba Prefecture and including much of the Kanto Plain by Thursday.” Needless to say, Japan is in for a big winter season event this week, so residents there are advised to monitor updates to the situation in the coming days. CENTRAL The central third of the WPAC region can expect some changes as well, as the aforementioned storm system pulls some cooler and drier air into the region. It’s a comfortable start to the day once again for resident in this portion of the region, with Taipei start the day off at 17C/63F, Hong Kong checking in with a low of 15C/59F, and Hanoi starting the morning with a cool low of 13C/56F. The current trough and associated low pressure areas attributed to the forming storm system could bring some rain showers to this portion of the WPAC over the next couple of days, as the frontal system associated with the storm pushes through the area. For the most part, though, the weather should be quite bearable. SOUTH The air is warming up over the southern third of the region as the remnant low of MEKKHALA moves out and away from the area. However, a trough will push down into this area by Wednesday and Thursday, and bring in some slightly cooler, and drier, air to the region. It’s a warm start this morning with Manila and Davao City in the Philippines checking in with a moist low of 26C/78F, and Brunei seeing plenty of rainfall and a low of 24C/75F. It’s a bit cooler and drier in Ho Chi Minh, as resident there get the day started with a low of 22C/72F. Portions of the southern Philippines, Brunei, and northern Indonesia will see persistent scattered shower activity thanks to a pair of low pressure troughs working their way through the region along the I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) over the next 48 hours. Other areas should see mostly warm temperatures and few scattered clouds. TROPICS The tropical islands of the WPAC are holding on to the warmest air in the region, not surprisingly. It’s quite warm in Majuro this morning as folks there wake up to a low of 28C/82F. It’s a little cooler and we work our way to the west and north, with Chuuk reporting a low of 27C/80F, Palau settling in at 26C/78F, with Yap and Pohnpei both reporting a morning minimum temperature of 24C/76F. Guam is once again the cool spot in the tropical WPAC, as folks there awaken to a morning low of 23C/74F. The I.T.C.Z. (Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone) is far less active out to the east, so residents off the islands can expect more nice weather through the next few days. Have a super great Tuesday!
