"The Butcher" strikes again. Wednesday night, August 21st at the… Sandbar & Grille in Buxton… We had 30 players including 4 new registrations visiting from Canada. Vanessa and the Richmond bunch came back to play with us. They are fun and the ladies can play some poker. Kristin Macdonald was back on the island visiting and joined us as well, and we also had a local new registration, Tyler Brown. Welcome to the league everybody and/or glad you came back to see us again. The winner took home a $50 Visa Gift Card and second place took a $20 Sandbar & Grille gift card, and both players are qualified for the HIPL 2013 Island Championship in November. We had four bounties for the night..., Rob Anders, Melina Thompson from King George, Phil Champagne from Canada and the Dark Knight from Gotham, none of which made it to the final table. Phil made it the furthest, almost making it to the final table but came up just a bit short. The Donkey Shout Out goes to our new local registration, James Brown… Heeey!… I feeeel good, da da, da da, da da, da… So good… Actually it’s James T. Brown but he goes by Tyler. Tyler got the donkey drink charm for being the first eliminated from the game. So the high hand bid, yes I said “bid” (singular) happened early. It was the third hand of the game and it was a big one. Thus therefore, no other bids for the night. It was a very highly ranked hand, Tammy Starkey hit, and I will stick my neck out there and say she probably locked up the 2013 High Hand Title. She got a 2000 chip up for winning a hand with “quads or better” when she raked the pot with a Royal Straight Flush-Clubs. She was up against a straight so she definitely had a caller and pulled it to the showdown. Normally she would have banked 2000 bonus chips for winning with the High Hand of the night, but since she is just visiting us for the week, I gave her the 2K in chips to use. I was pretty sure that no one was going to beat that hand. There are only two hands that can outrank hers, a royal straight flush-hearts or spades. Good Luck with that ya’ll. Congrats Tammy. Oh yeah, the very next hand, she hit a straight flush to the 5. No one called her but still… Really? And yes… The HIPL bought her a Royal Flush for winning with a Royal Flush. Side note: Rob Anders did hit quad 3s after the fact and did get the 2000 chip up for winning a hand with... “Quads or better”. The final table was mostly local regulars, 6 inside the top 18. We also had 2 visitors make the final table. One from Gatineau, Quebec and one from… yes Richmond, Virginia. Troy Ahrendt made it to his nineteenth final placing 8th. He is in sixth in the points, two behind Sandie Walker. Vanessa Quyle, our second place finisher Monday from Richmond, made it to her second final in a row, in her second game with us placing 7th. She jumped up 43 spots in the points to 88th out of 331 players in only two games. Nice work Vanessa. I’m thinking we will probably see her and her mother, Tammy Starkey who is 108th in the points, in November. Vanessa won a seat in the Championship and I’m pretty sure Tammy will be getting a trophy and possibly a wild card seat at the championship. Alex Bonner made it to his 30th final of the season and placed 6th. He leads the finals title race by three finals over Eddie Ochs and is second in the points’ title race, trailing the points’ leader, Eddie, by 248 points. Alex v. Eddie… Eddie v. Alex. Anna Crum made it to her eighth final of the year and placed 5th. She has worked her way up to sixteenth in the points’ only sixteen points behind Tammy Tinsley. Tim Morgan made it to his eighteenth final of the season placing 4th. He is thirteenth in the points’ only five points behind Kayla Charrette. Sandie Walker made it to her twenty third final table of the season and placed 3rd. She moved up one spot in the points to fifth, just two points ahead of Troy. That left the finals’ heads up to be settled between Damon Ahrendt and Gabrielle Papineau, visiting us from Gatineau, Canada. Damon was at his ninth final of the year, looking for his second win in as many games and Gabrielle was at her first final in only her first game with us. The blinds were 30 and 60K, I was dealing. Damon was in the small blind with 5-8 off suit and Gabrielle was in the big blind with J-3 off suit. Damon called the blind and Gabrielle checked her option. The flop was 3-5-9… Damon was ahead with a pair of 5s. Gabrielle had a pair of 3s and went all in. Damon called… Flip ‘em. The turn was a 6… Damon is still ahead with a pair of 5s and now has a gut shot straight draw. Gabrielle has a pair of threes and needs a Jack or another three desperately. The river is a 7… Damon hits his gut shot and has a straight to the nine. Damon wins the hand and had Gabrielle’s 70k all in covered, so Damon wins the game and the Visa. He single handedly took out 4 players (2nd – 5th) in the last three hands. He moved up one spot in the points to 18th and is only 34 points behind Bruce Anderson. Gabrielle placed 2nd, got the Sandbar gift card and qualified for the Island Championship in November, all in her very first game with us. Well played Gabrielle. Welcome to the Hatteras Island Poker League. There were only two players in the Loser’s Lounge. Eddie Ochs and Harold Blakney decided to just draw for it, best out of three. This is how it went down in a much more dramatic fashion , of course... Eddie won the first draw… King over 7. Harold won the second draw… Ace over Queen. The third draw was Queen over Jack. Harold got bonus points for second and Eddie got bonus points and banked 2000 bonus chips for winning in the lounge. OK, So… Damon won his second game in a row so... That means… Bounty time….. The HIPL will challenge Damon by putting a game bounty on his head. Three wins in a row will mean a prize upgrade for Damon. Anybody that takes Damon out and wins the game will receive the prize upgrade, transferable down to the final five. $50 prize upgrades to 75 and $75 upgrades to 125. More about that later… Let’s see if we can get a response from... “The Butcher”.
