“The Greatest Need” Gen 41:55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. 56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. 57 And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the famine was so sore in all lands. One of the greatest needs for a human body is food. The other is water. Now that the seven years of famine had hit just as God said, people were in a state of shock because they had not prepared properly for that time. They were at the palace crying out before the leadership of Egypt for what they needed as a result of their lack of planning and putting back for tough times. It is evident how precious food is even when a person might have own a home that was the most expensive. People could not eat their homes or their expensive chariots. Amazing what perspective we have when the most precious commodity is food and our bodies have been made for it. There are times in our history recently when a crisis hits a part of our nation and people go to the store and buy up loads of water and food for the storm or situation. Others that waited too long to get supplies were met with empty shelves at their local Walmart or other department stores. The law of supply and demand hit suddenly in these cases with prices jumping accordingly. Any government can have its citizen’s houses, land or anything of value when there is a lack of food or water because that is what the human body needs. The principle applies here spiritually too. Christians assume that God will supply all their need but fail to plan for famine. In Amos 8:11 God said that there would be a famine, not of food or water but of hearing the word of the Lord. Today we have a famine of hearing the word of God. It is not that God’s word is not going forth but that people are dull of hearing or even taking time to read it and then heed it. Apostasy fills our land in many pulpits with the feel good philosophy that tickle the ears of those that have turned their ears from the truth and then believe many lies. But when the truth is being preached from some pulpits across this great land, God’s people will not take it from His word but from the messenger. Joseph was the man that Pharaoh sent the people to when thy needed food and as Joseph said, that was what these hungry people were to do. The land of Egypt became very wealthy for all the silver, gold, houses, lands and then slavery of families came under Joseph’s rule. Kind of sounds scary, huh? The difference was that Joseph is filled with compassion for the people and was diligent to put back the necessary food during the seven years of plenty. We also need to read and avail ourselves of God’s word in time of plenty with a bottomless pit spiritually because there is coming a time that we will need it. The Holy Spirit of God will pull that memorized verse up in your heart when famine hits and you will be delivered from giving up on God spiritually. Today if you will hear his voice, harden not your heart – Hebrews 3:7-9. Allow God to dig deep within your soul with His comforting and at times correcting word. Be built up by God’s word daily. It will be the treasure that will help in the physical famine. Learn to lean upon the Lord and not self for daily strength or understanding – Prov. 3:5-6.
