‘The Hug’ - Calotes style ! by Sanjeev Shevade ‘The Hug’ - Calotes style ! by Sanjeev Shevade is TheUntamedEarth moments image for the month of December 2014 “ … a small garden in our building attracts a lot of insects and butterflies are quite common. With such juicy meals around, an opportunistic Garden Lizard is never too far away. As I was examining some caterpillars feeding on a Spider Lily flower, I happened to notice this Lizard. It was absolutely motionless, perhaps in ambush ! … I just loved this pose, the way his limbs had hugged the twig as it stretched along its length. Even though it was absolutely still, its ever watchful eyes were constantly monitoring my every move. I had never seen the limbs of a lizard so closely and marveled at those long, slender toes, tipped with a claw … no wonder then that they have such a sure grip” The Oriental Garden Lizard, Eastern Garden Lizard or Changeable Lizard ( Calotes versicolor) is a widely distributed lizard and a common sight even in the most urbanized regions. It is mainly an insectivore. Although armed with teeth, they are for gripping the prey and not for tearing it, so the prey is swallowed as a whole. The male gets a bright red throat in the breeding season leading to a common but an incorrect name of ‘Bloodsucker’.
