“The Polynesia”apartment complex 7314 Variel – 1 block north of Sherman Way Built in 1961, Architect - Lucille Raport, Builder - Max Resnick For a time in the West Valley, Polynesian style apartments were quite popular. Over the years, many of them have been remodeled, re-landscaped, or demolished due to earthquake damage. . This one stands out, due to the 26 foot high, sculpted, authentic reproduction of a wooden mask from Tami Island in Huon Gulf, New Guinea. The sculpture was done by Milton Tuttle, using an ancient technique called sgraffito, which is a reverse sculpting that carves away figures and patterns through layers of plaster and stucco. . When built, the apartment complex featured Tiki Totems and gas torches along the front of the building. General Electric air conditioners were installed in the building, which was then, in turn, featured in print ads for General Electric air conditioners. The totems and torches have long since been removed.
