***The Vampir Metrou***(imported post) Peter Plogojowitz......A Serbian Vampire?. (Story) This case of vampirism took place in a section of Serbia that later became part of Hungary. The hunters in this account conveyed their feelings to an impartial observer, who then prepared a record of the incident in a thorough manner. The amount of evidence present in the case makes a strong argument for the existence of immortal blood drinkers if viewed alone. However, as in the other similar cases, the possible non-occult explanations weaken the case. Some of the characteristics of this incident are similar to those of the previous one. The incident took place in the village of Kisilova around the mid-1720s. It should be noted, before proceeding, that the facts are taken from the eyewitness report of the Imperial Provisor of the region. He was present, along with the Gradisk parish priest(called a pope), at the exhumation of the vampire. Whether that makes the information any more reliable than accounts of other incidents remains to be seen. Unfortunately, the victims accounts of what happpened were not recorded in a manner that lends them credibility(there are no surviving quotes from any of those attacked, although one of the victims was identified). Peter Plogojowitz, the alleged vampire, died(its not clear of what) and was buried. He was in his grave for about then weeks when the villagers reported seeing him at night. They claimed that he came to them while they were in their bed and attacked them(it is Plogojowitzs alleged materializations in the houses of others that made him a phantom-like vampire). Some victims indicated that the vampire suffocated them. Overall, nine people died within a week. The general panic worsened when Plogojowitzs wife claimed to have seen her husband. She said that he came to her asking for his shoes(it was a common belief in Europe that vampires desired certain earthly possessions). The woman was so terrified by the encounter that she left the village. After that, the people decided to exhume Plogojowitzs body to dispose of him as a threat once and for all. The Imperial Provisor who reported the incident was at first against the idea fo the vampire hunt, but he saw that the people could not be discouraged. So he and the parish priest went to the graveyard. When the body was exhumed, the fist thing they noticed was that it was odor-free. They also noticed that the body was not decomposed and was whole, except for the nose, which had fallen away. Also, Plogojowitzs skin had fallen away, and new skin was growing. The same was true for his nails. Finally, there was blood flowing from his mouth. To destroy the body, the traditional stake was used. When it was driven through the vampire, plenty of what was believed to be fresh blood issued forth from the body. The body also displayed some wild signs which were not made clear in the report. After the staking, the body was burned and the village was no longer troubled. The Report of 1725....... This official Government document was written by a German military official stationed in the village of Kisilova. And since with such people (which they call vampires) various are to be seen that is, the body undecomposed, the skin, hair, beard, and nails growing - the subjects resolved unanimously to open the grave of Peter Plogojowitz and to see if such above-mentioned signs were really to be found on him. To this end they came here to me and, telling of these events, asked me and the local parish priest, to be present at the viewing- And although I at first disapproved, telling them that the praiseworthy administration should first be dutifully and humbly informed. and its exalted opinion about this should be heard, they did not want to accommodate themselves to this at all, but rather gave this short answer: I could do what I wanted, but if I did not accord them the viewing and the legal recognition to deal with the body according to their custom, they would have to leave house and home, because by the time a gracious resolution was received from Belgrade, perhaps the entire village - and this was already supposed to have happened in Turkish times - could be destroyed by such an evil spirit, and they did not want to wait for this. Since I could not hold these people from the resolution they had made, either with good words or with threats, I went to the village of Kisilova, taking along the Gradisk priest, and viewed the body of Peter Plogojowitz, just exhumed, finding, in accordance with thorough truthfulness, that first of all I did not detect the slightest odour that is otherwise characteristic of the dead, and the body, except for the nose, which was somewhat fallen away, was completely fresh. The hair and beard- even the nails, of which the old ones had fallen away - had grown on him; the old skin, which was somewhat whitish, had peeled away, and a new one had emerged from it. The face, hands, and feet and the whole body were so constituted, that they could not have been more complete in his lifetime. Not without astonishment, I saw some fresh blood in his mouth, which, according to the common observation, he had sucked from the people killed by him. In short, all the indications were present that such people (as remarked above) are said to have. After both the priest and I had seen this spectacle, while people grew more outraged than distressed, all the subjects, with great speed, sharpened a stake - in order to pierce the corpse of the deceased with it- and put this at his heart, whereupon, as he was pierced, not only did much blood, completely fresh, flow also through his ears and mouth, but still other wild signs (which I pass by out of high respect) took place. Finally, according to their usual practice, they burned the often mentioned body, in his case, to ashes of which I inform the most laudable Administration, and at the same time would like to request, obediently and humbly, that if a mistake was made in this matter, such is to be attributed not to me but to the rabble, who were beside themselves with fear.
