“The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.” These photos show visiting students from Virgina Tech, USA, who joined with students and staff from GMIT Letterfrack in planting trees on a site to the rear of the GMIT Letterfrack campus. The initiative is part of a biodiversity project to develop a new woodland on a site known as the Community Educational Woodland, which will form part of Connemara National Park. They tended the plot, weeded and thinned the saplings by hand, and created wooden paneling providing information on each species of tree planted. The wooden panels were made from the species itself and engraved in the college (using the latest CNC laser technology). This was part of an initiative undertaken in a bid to achieve Green Campus status for GMIT Letterfrack. GMIT Letterfrack and Connemara West PLC were assessed for Green Campus Flag on Monday 7 April, and An Taisce are due to issue a decision in May. GMIT Mayo campus, which was one of the first IT campuses to get a Green Flag, was awarded its second flag in 2013.
