“The land is our mother, we want to protect it, and we want other people to work with us in the protection of this place.” Aunty Maureen is a custodian of the Pilliga. She is a Gomeroi/Gamilaraay Traditional Owner and it is her responsibility to ensure that the sacred Country is protected. The Pilliga is known as ‘Noah’s Ark’ because it provides a sanctuary for so many threatened animals. It is also a vital refill zone for the Great Artesian Basin – a vast underground water reserve that provides year-round access to water and is the lifeblood of rural Australia. Together with her good friend, Jane, a local of more than 40 years, Aunty Maureen is standing her ground against the Santos gas invasion that seeks to turn the Pilliga into an industrial wasteland. This week Santos vowed to turn North West New South Wales into a ‘hotbed’ of coal seam gas mining. Share this video to show your support for Aunty Maureen and Jane’s Pilliga community.
