“The land is our mother, we want to protect it, and we want other people to work with us in the protection of this place.” Aunty Maureen is a custodian of the Pilliga. She is a Gomeroi/Gamilaraay Traditional Owner and it is her responsibility to ensure that the sacred Country is protected. The Pilliga is known as ‘Noah’s Ark’ because it provides a sanctuary for so many threatened animals. It is also a vital refill zone for the Great Artesian Basin – a vast underground water reserve that provides year-round access to water and is the lifeblood of rural Australia. Together with her good friend, Jane, a local of more than 40 years, Aunty Maureen is standing her ground against the Santos gas invasion that seeks to turn the Pilliga into an industrial wasteland.
