[The preliminary "mangala" verses of the 13th century "Message to Unnunili", by an anonymous poet] 1. The moon, A garland of skulls And the heavenly river Ganga Adorn the top of your head. The loveliest ashes Enhance the beauty of your skin color. A skull is held in your hand. Fiery-eyed God Shiva Embraced with the Goddess - Hail to you! 2. Once upon a time God became an elephant, And the Goddess - A she elephant. When they made love, An elephant faced deity was born. I hereby bow to Him Before composing A message as sweet as ambrosia, To that Uṇṇinīli of the Muṇṭekkal house. 3. I salute to the Goddess of speech, As delighting as moon and nectar. I am a fool, and yet Possessed by Desire. So here I am, Praising that woman: Curly hair, thick and dark, Reaches her feet. The strength of the House of Muṇṭĕkkal Is always that doe-eyed Uṇṇinīli. 4. A lotus pond for the bee-like glances Of Goddess Lakṣmi; A lamp of nectar for Goddess Earth; A string of pearls For the exquisite crown jewel Of the Veṇpala king Maṇikaṇṭhan; She is the most beloved In the house of Muṇṭěkkal – With the God of Love as their family deity. That Uṇṇinili, with her dazzling dark hair - May her birth star shine for long! 5. This praise makes Himālaya eager for more and more snow. It causes Lakṣmi, the goddes of fame, to work too hard upon the earth. So, Enough of this talk! Therefore, My dear Uṇṇinīli, Please listen to my jewel of verses, Let it endow your house with superiority.
