The recent results of admission test arranged by English - TopicsExpress

The recent results of admission test arranged by English Department of Rajshahi University focus on a complete picture of our students’ skill in English language. It is really alarming because we know that only twenty five students out of more than twenty one thousand applicants have been able to score qualifying marks though English in our country has been being taught as a foreighn language from the primary level. Many of us may quarrel with me over the quality of the question and justify the failure of the students by telling that the question was very tough. But I am deadly against them because of many reasons. As I am a learner of English language, I think a thorough investigation of the massive failure in achieving qualifying marks is needed to find out the real causes of the failure. I can predict some major causes which are responsible for their failure. Perhaps it is an open secret to all the teachers of school and college level who work as examiners and head-examiners under different education boards in Bangladesh that marks have been being given excessively since 2010 if the examinees can write something in English. It does not matter at all whether the sentences are written in correct English or not. Instructions are given to award credit as much as possible so that the percentage of GPA- 5 holders of a particular education board can be better than any other education board in Bangladesh. A message has been sent to the students that if they can write something, credit will be awarded automatically in the public examinations like JSC, SSC,HSC etc.which are the pillars of attaining self-reliance in their future life .Can you guess what may happen if this train of providing credit in the public examination goes on ?The outcome of it is the establishment of many private higher educational institutions in different places where certificates are being sold at a high cost Our economy is based on agriculture and when the students from our agrarian society get good marks , their parents invest more money for them in their higher education to get minimum returns in their old age. But the irony is that many of them prove unfit in the job-interviews because they can not score qualifying marks like the admission test of English Department of Rajshahi University..
