“The song ‘Dixie’ is beautiful, and was actually Abraham Lincoln’s favorite song. While I realize there have always been and always will be those who only hear ‘Dixie’ with negative feelings about the people of the South, they could not be more wrong. It is about a good and decent people who possess a deep faith and a fierce patriotism. I have always believed it is not what you hear and see but rather, what you feel about what you hear and see. When I hear ‘Dixie,’ I see the goodness in the people of the Great Southland. To those who will never hear anything redeeming in the song ‘Dixie’ and in thinking about that, I am reminded of Don McLean’s words from ‘Vincent,’ when he wrote, ‘....they would not listen, they’re not listening still, perhaps they never will….’ For me, I hope you will hear and see the beauty of the song ‘Dixie…..” George C.
