#TheKnowers: Mount ‘Uḥud One of the most famous mountains for Muslims, it is the site on which the Battle of ‘Uḥud took place, and at its foot lies the grave of the paternal uncle of the Prophet (ﷺ) known as the Chief of all martyrs, Sayyidīna Ḥamzah. This mountain knew the Prophet (ﷺ), and it loved the Prophet (ﷺ) too, so much so that the mountain shook out of pure excitement when the Prophet (ﷺ) was on it with some of his companions. The Prophet (ﷺ) glancing at the fortunate mountain declared, “‘Uḥud is a mountain which loves us, and we love it.” This is part of Prophetic character, to reciprocate love. It’s interesting the ancient philosopher Confucius is reported to have said, “Mountains love sages, and sages love mountains.” There’s a primordial connection between the two, there always has been. The Prophet (ﷺ) had a connection with so many mountains; the most recognized are probably Jabal Nūr and Jabal Thawr. To this day we describe great men and women of Allāh as mountains. Why? A simple explanation is that mountains are often enormous, thus to describe a person as a mountain is to encapsulate the awesomeness they behold. A more scientific explanation is that mountains hold the earth in place, if a mountain were to be removed the surrounding earth and land that lies above the various tectonic plates would crumble; great men and women of Allāh do the same thing, they hold the earth together, they keep order. During the Battle of ‘Uḥud the Prophet (ﷺ) was injured really badly this led to a great loss of blood. I am told that the site where he bled can still be found within one of the caves of ‘Uḥud. Whilst the blood itself is probably not visible, the traces of it still are, in that it has the most amazing fragrance, one that has been described for well over 1000 years. Its rather apt I think for ‘Uḥud to have a little bit of the Prophet (ﷺ), fortifying its love for the Prophet (ﷺ), and the Prophets (ﷺ) love for the mountain.
