" Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. He began to build on the second day in the second month of the fourth year of his reign." (2 Chronicles 3:1-2, NASB95) For years King David had dreamt of building a house for God, a Temple in Jerusalem. Because of his sin God did not allow it. In grace, however, God gave the privilege to David’s son, Solomon. 2 Chronicles 3-5 gives the sketch of the magnificent temple which Solomon built. Though, not a large building at 30 feet by 90 feet, the building was, nonetheless, the most splendid structure in Jerusalem. Its massive gold-adorned entrance stood 120 feet into the air, with two radiant pillars at either side of the entrance. Already built atop Mount Moriah, this entrance alone caused the Temple to be the most prominent feature both in the city and all around the surrounding mountains. Although the building itself was not large, the entire temple complex was much larger, including the courtyards for men, women, and gentiles. There is one notable difference between today’s churches and yesterday’s Temple—auditorium seating. The Temple was a place of service, singing, and sacrifice, but not sitting! Have today’s churches developed into a place to “sit and soak” rather than serve, sing, and sacrifice? Has the church come to be a place where “my needs are met” rather than a place where God’s glory is praised? For you personally, is the church a place of receiving or of giving? Do you get frustrated when you come to church because things are not like you wanted them? Do you find yourself biting your tongue and biding your time? If so, you very likely need to deal with some heart issues! The next time you are in church, enter to give! Give your heart, your time, your love, your service, your sacrifice. See no one but God, and see God through the other worshipers that may be there. Make your church a place where you leave the world behind and you abandon yourself to worship and serve God. If you do this, you will have a transforming worship experience!
