"There are numerous physiological responses to negative energy balance and weight loss- one such response is a drop is plasma leptin levels. We tend to view this as an unfavorable response, because lower leptin levels are associated with decreased energy expenditure/metabolic rate and decreased satiety. Researchers at Columbia University have shown that intravenous administration of leptin can attenuate declines in satiety and energy expenditure in subjects who have lost 10% of their body weight (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22237063). While intravenous leptin administration is not practical or feasible, a dieter can temporarily boost leptin levels with a short-term carbohydrate refeed. Although the magnitude is likely modest compared to exogenous leptin administration, this temporary increase in serum leptin levels should theoretically help to attenuate unfavorable declines in energy expenditure and satiety. Refeeds also allow the dieter to refill depleted glycogen stores and enjoy a day of increased caloric intake, therefore making the refeed a useful tool for the dieting competitor."
