....There is a lot of education to be done, especially among high school and college students, about disobedience to government. Read Thoreau’s essay “Civil Disobedience.” Read the history of the Vietnam War. History is very important. Read the history of wars and the history of foreign policy—...—and you can never again believe the president of the United States when he comes before the public and says, “We have got to fight this war, we are in danger, it is for national security, I am here to defend you, it is a war against terrorism,” and all that crap, really. You might not know definitively that he is lying, because maybe this is a break from history. Governments have lied again and again, from the Mexican War, the Spanish-American War, the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Panama War, Grenada War, the Gulf War. But this time they are telling the truth. Maybe. But you would start out in skepticism; you would not rush to believe the president. There is a lot of education to be done about history, about the meaning of democracy, about the meaning of patriotism....Howard Zinn, historian
