“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:12 (NKJV) Many of us, surely, have had the unpleasant experience of making a glaring mistake on some routine job that we thought we could do with our eyes closed. Maybe it was an embarrassing typo in an important document, or getting the wires crossed in a simple electrical repair. Familiarity can make us overconfident in our ability. Peter’s experience on the dreadful night before Jesus died illustrates that it’s possible to develop that same sort of attitude concerning our faith. Peter spoke without understanding the severity with which his faith would be tried. And who can accurately predict the harshness of the trials in store for us? We can make all our decisions about right and wrong, set them in concrete and put ourselves on cruise control, confident that we are ready for whatever trials may come. But this approach is dangerous (even if our decisions are right) because we should never stop studying and growing. Complacency may lead to spiritual drowsiness, making us highly vulnerable to Satan’s overtures. The alert discipline, though, sees ahead to possible consequences of today’s behavior and thus avoids many mistakes and is better prepared to withstand new assaults by Satan. I hope that describes you. Look Up and Reach Out!
