John 18:28 It seems to me this passage is about cognitive dissonance: namely, distracting oneself from the reality of committing a great evil by keeping a morally-neutral tradition. Would one distract themselves from pretending that a poor, hungry man looks to you to help them eat by keeping the tradition of dipping ones hand in holy water and crossing themselves at the threshold of a Church? What tradition do I cling to in order to distract myself from the side of me who would betray an innocent, or be unmoved by human bloodshed?
