‘This is the End’ Review - By Isaac Mendelawitz This was probably the first time where throughout the whole film I was laughing and so was everyone else around me. Most comedies nowadays are just disappointments where most of the try-hard funny bits were shown in the trailer. When I watched the first trailer, I actually really wanted to see the movie because it felt original and I was laughing throughout most of it. And unlike most comedies, the trailer didn’t show off the best gags and jokes which leaves plenty of gags to surprise you in the film. The basic storyline of this film is that Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are attending James Franco’s house warming party when they are faced with the apocalypse. It is easy to realise that this film came about because a group of friends just wanted to have fun. Evan Goldberg is one of the writers and Seth Rogen, who was the writer of Superbad and Pineapple Express, wrote it as well and the style of jokes resemble the ones from his previous films. Throughout most of the film, the cast were able to just improvise most of their jokes and funny bits and it really shows the great talent of the cast. So to some degree you could say that the film is just funny sketches being stitched together. Because there was so much improv, I thought that the film would become a bit mixed up with no real timeline of events. Though the writers were able to give the cast their time to do ‘their thing’ while also going along with the story. A central theme for this film is friendship and the audience can relate well with Jay as he is the outsider of the group and isn’t with the Hollywood trends. As I had said earlier, the cast really showed their comedic skills as they did a lot of improv and that is where the film really shines because the jokes aren’t always scripted and thats what the audience loves. I think the only real issue with this film is that it feels as though it is taking too long to get to a conclusion. The story is very basic so then again it is expected. The film is just really funny and people should enter the theatre to expect a comedy and not a film with complex themes. Though it is the apocalypse and there are some freaky scenes in there. This is undoubtedly one of the best comedies since 21 jump street and possibly the best comedy of 2013. A way to measure the decency of the film is how much the audience laughed, with the answer being a lot. If you are fans of Goldberg and Rogen’s work then you will have to check this film out. I am going to give this film an 8.5/10. For all things film, stay tuned to Mayhem Film Reviews
