“This isolated drop of blue, beneath a cirque of raw Welsh - TopicsExpress

“This isolated drop of blue, beneath a cirque of raw Welsh hills, is enchanting – and enchanted,” accordingly to the Lonely Planet’s 1,000 Ultimate Sights. Legend has it, that in the 11th century, Llyn y Fan Fach was the site that a farmer grazing cattle on the nearby slopes spotted the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. She was a fairy maiden, who agreed to marry him on one proviso – he must not strike her more than twice. In time, the inevitable happened – three strikes (all accidental we might add) and the otherworldly wife disappeared back into the lake, taking her magic cows with her. The fairy maiden returned from the lake to help instruct her children about the rich medicinal herbs and bog plants that surrounded the lake, and in time her children became famous doctors that are known today as the Physicians of Myddfai. Some of these ancient remedies are recorded in the Red Book of Hergest. The book itself currently belongs to Jesus College, Oxford, and is kept in the Bodleian Library. Others believe that the myth of Llyn-y-Fan Fach gave rise to another famous tale – the Arthurian legend of the Lady of the Lake and Excalibur. Whatever you believe, we don’t think anyone can deny the magical beauty of this incredible area. You can read more about this magical place here: breconbeacons.org/lady-lake-physicians-myddfai
