:: This past Monday, the Federation took a bold step in a new direction -- projectile weaponry. To combat the Dominion, and allow new tactical options, the MACO/Marines have added the TR-116 rifle to their armory. Some Starfleet security personnel in battlefield situations are being given the new rifle as well. For those unfamiliar, the TR-116 was developed a few years ago by Starfleet Security to operate in energy-dampening fields and radiogenic environments -- locations in which a phaser does not function. Ultimately, however, the project was abandoned in favor of regenerative phasers. A few months ago, at the request of the MACO/Marines, the project returned to development, and was given the go-ahead as a new Marine rifle. MACO believes this new rifle could give them an edge over the distruptor technology currently in use by the Dominion and her allies. It also has a greater range not attainable by phased beam targeting, which in turn allows the Marines greater tactical options on the battlefield.
