"This significant Democratic advantage among Hispanics, regardless - TopicsExpress

"This significant Democratic advantage among Hispanics, regardless of whether they are U.S.-born or immigrants, suggests that simply waiting for Hispanics to assimilate will not be a successful strategy for Republicans hoping to capture a greater percentage of the Hispanic vote." Similar polls have showed that even if Hispanics self-identify as conservatives, they will not vote Republican if they feel the Party’s tone on immigration is too harsh. Moreover, affluent Mexican-Americans, who should the natural fiscal conservative base for the GOP, also don’t vote Republican when they feel the Party has moved away from the W. Bush policies on trade and immigration and voter registration in Latino communities. Thus. the problem for the GOP is not that immigrants, if the become citizens, will vote Democrat. The real problem is how the GOP can change its image with US-born Latinos, especially Mexican-Americans in the southwest who make 90% of the entire Latino population.
