“Though Ive grown old the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe.” It’s one of the memorable lines from the movie, Polar Express, an annual Christmas Eve event for Alexis and me (and sometimes, mom). And it echoes my Christmas prayer for all my friends… that no matter how old we get, no matter what the experiences of life, that we never let ourselves wither within – never allow our hearts to shrink back by virtue of use (the exercise of ebb and flow should make them stronger and bigger and us more able to love)… that we never go deaf to the exhilarating sounds of loved ones voices or the empowerment of people’s cries for help… and that we never go blind to the beautiful things around us; the light in other’s eyes, the lifelines on the faces of those we journey with, and the new life that keeps springing up around us… There are many things in life that “mark” the years and try, with all their might, to keep us from hearing the ringing of the bell; the call to faith, the call to joy, the call to life… but for those who truly believe… in God, and the life He lays out before us… the bell will ring all the way thru life until at last we hear a little different tone calling us, “Come and get it,” to a great banquet for all who truly believe!
