#ThoughtforThursday #HIIT #fitness #exercise #toptips #personaltrainer #highgate My thoughts on HIIT There is always a lot in the media surrounding High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), as it’s often known as, and the health benefits surrounding it. Speaking as someone who has been in the industry for well over a decade I can safely say that PTs like myself have been banging this drum for years. HIIT, circuit training, Crossfit, Tabata, metabolic conditioning or good old fashioned Fartlek Training as we called it at school (it definitely needed rebranding) is a very efficient way to improve your cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, metabolic rate and burn body fat. The key is to work to maximum (or near maximum) over short bursts of time and alternate it with rest periods. It can be done using bodyweight exercises, free weight movements, sprinting, boxing, skipping, cycling or a combination of all of them. Sessions are fun and fast and are a great way of maximising your time in the gym. There is one caveat to this great way of exercising; you need to make sure your body is up to the task. If you suffer from adrenal fatigue, chronic fatigue, a heart condition, are pregnant, have terrible mobility or are a complete beginner to exercise then this is not for you. Spend your time building the foundations of fitness and work on strength, endurance, mobility, flexibility and good nutrition and once you are able to exercise without pain, or without it negatively affecting your health, you can try the advanced stuff. Stay healthy...
