#ThrowbackThursday #TBT 24 September 2013, going back just less than a year to the day Ringo Starr was awarded the Insigne de Commandeur de lordre des Arts et Lettres or Commander of Frances Order of Arts and Letters. The ceremony took place in Monaco where an exhibition featuring two of his paintings was taking place, the man who is considered one of the worlds best drummers was handed the award by Frances ambassador Hugues Moret. Starr joined a club that already features Chinese film director Wong Kar Wai, Scottish actor Sean Connery, singer David Bowie and the late Irish poet Seamus Heaney. There are three types of Arts et Lettres medals - Chevalier (knight) Officier (officer) and Commandeur (Commander). The official way of wearing the medal is on the chest. When receive this medal during the ceremony, you receive a rosette too. Its like a small pin you can wear on your jacket, with a white ribbon. Other famous names to be awarded include: Gilbert Bécaud, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Didier Deschamps, JC de Castelbajac, Petula Clark, Mikhaïl Gorbatchev, Groucho Marx, Roger Moore, Elizabeth Taylor and Clint Eastwood. In 2012 Sir Paul McCartney was awarded the French Legion Of Honour medal, a higher award and much deserved too. I would like to thank French artist Céline Le Breton for her help and research on this subject. Merci beaucoup. - Mark (page manager).
