#ThrowbackThursday #TBT My how hes grown! Arthur was born January 31, 2000 at the Coulston Foundation in the late 1990s. When Arthur was two, he was sold to the owner of a minor league baseball team to be put on exhibit during promotional events at the ballpark. Arthur, along with another young chimp named Phoenix who was also sold by Coulston, were housed at a shoddy roadside animal park. The park was cited on several occasions by the Department of Agriculture with Animal Welfare Act non-compliance. After only a few days living there, notes state that Arthur developed some behavioral issues, including rocking back and forth which is commonly associated with stress of captive chimpanzees. He would cling to Phoenixs back for comfort even though she was younger and much smaller than he was. After a lawsuit was filed, the owner was ordered to transfer custody of the two chimpanzees. This resulted in Save the Chimps gaining permanent custody. Arthur now lives at Save the Chimps on an island in sunny Florida in a large social group. He shows no signs of the behavioral problems he was developing early in life. Hes now free to be chimpanzee!
