#ThrowbackThursday: The massive radio telescope near the town of Arecibo in Puerto Rico is the result of DARPA’s early efforts in ballistic missile detection. Today the radio telescope, which has unsurpassed electromagnetic wave-gathering capacity, is operated by SRI International, the Universities Space Research Association, and Puerto Ricos Metropolitan University, under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. From its construction in the 1960s until 2011, the observatory was managed by Cornell University. (Images courtesy of National Science Foundation (NSF))
