“Time warp Tuesday” - Many historic events captured the attention of folks both here and abroad in 1968. Among them; Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were both shot and killed, the launch of Apollo 8 began the first US mission to orbit the moon, Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act; Mickey Mantel hit his final career homer and Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman” album was released. Songwriter Jimmy Webb found inspiration driving into the setting sun of rural Washita County, Oklahoma while passing pole after telephone pole on a long stretch of road that seemingly had no end. In the distance, against the vibrant hues of the days end, was a dark silhouette of lineman working atop a pole. He tried to imagine himself there, a lonely man, working the lines, holding the receiver and what he might say to the person on the other end of the line. He chose to use Wichita instead of Washita in the lyrics because it flowed and sang better. Wichita Lineman remained on the charts for 15 weeks and in 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #192 on its list of the top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. https://youtube/watch?v=4qoymGCDYzU
