“To Cull or not to Cull” What do you do when you know the landowner needs you to keep red deer away from their fields yet you do not want to shoot more than you can eat and keep the best animals for next roar? The annual spring dry in Eastern Australia consistently throws up this conundrum, because stags have dropped their antlers and hinds are pregnant with end-of-year calves. As a hunter, the latter is my preference, however I know that these farmers trust me to manage feral animals on their land, so the right thing to do is take cull red deer when they are a problem. And when large herds of 15-20 head start browsing on one paddock it is time to take action as a land manager rather than a hunter. It is the right thing to do for the landowner and the red deer. Choosing to take out the more inferior ferals keeps the best one for next year and helps the farmer keep his domestic herds fed and watered. Do the right thing and cull if you have to, because it is the right thing to do as a hunter and manager.
