[Today in History – October 15] On this day, sixty-five years ago, the new headquarters of the Girl Guides Association of Barbados at “Pax Hill”, Belmont Road, St. Michael was opened by the then Governor’s wife, Lady Rance. The wooden building, which was formerly an army hut located at Needham’s Point, was donated by the Government of Barbados, and blessed by the Bishop William Hughes (1945-1950). The Headquarters was named ‘Pax Hill’ after the residence of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell in England. Lord Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scout Movement in 1907, and in 1910, with the help of his sister Agnes the Girl Guides Association was formed. His wife Olave, whom he met in 1912 assisted him in his work and was the first World Chief Guide. The current stone building “Pax Hill,” was opened by Lady Baden Powell on March 13, 1964.
