Today is Krishna Janmastmi! On this day, the birth of the 8th avatar of Lord Vishnu, Krishna, is celebrated. Krishna was born at midnight, to parents Vasudeva and Devki in Mathura. The parents were locked in jail here by Devkis brother King Kansa, who claimed the throne by imprisoning his father. King Kansa was told that Devkis 8th son would kill him, so he killed every one of Devkis babies. Following the birth of Devkis 8th baby, Krishna, Lord Vishnu told Vasudeva to take him to Gokul in the middle of the night. Vasudeva crossed the flooding river Yamuna, which made way for him. The rain was falling heavily, so he carried baby Krishna on his head and a five mouth snake followed them, sheltering the baby. When Vasudeva got to the village, he swapped Krishna for the baby of Nandha and Yashoda. Here he would live safely, away from King Kansa. Vasudeva returned to the jail with Yashudas daughter. When King Kansa woke up the next day and tried to kill her, she rose up and became Yogmaya (Lord Vishnus helper) and warned King Kansa of his death! Krishna grew up in Gokul, and eventually returned to Mathura where he killed King Kansa. Krishna is considered the most powerful avatar of Vishnu, born to end evil.
