“Today on Yom HaShoah we stand together with Jewish communities in Canada and around the world in remembering the millions of innocent men, women and children murdered during one of the most horrific and inhumane periods of human history. “The Holocaust stands alone for the sheer cruelty and brutality of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis. All of us have a solemn responsibility to remember those who perished during the Shoah, to honour and learn from the survivors, and to teach future generations about the horrors of the Holocaust. We must draw lessons from this dark chapter of history to prevent it from ever being repeated. “Throughout this past year, Canada maintained our status as a world leader in Holocaust commemoration as the Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). We will continue to work closely with the IHRA to promote Holocaust education, remembrance and research and to combat anti-Semitism worldwide. “As Minister for Multiculturalism, I encourage Canadians to use the occasion of Yom Hashoah to reflect on the Holocaust and the lessons learned, to recognize its survivors, and to commemorate its victims.” « À l’occasion de Yom ha-Choah, nous nous joignons aujourd’hui aux communautés juives du Canada et du monde entier pour nous rappeler les millions d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants innocents assassinés durant l’une des périodes les plus horribles et inhumaines de l’histoire de l’humanité. L’Holocauste se démarque par la cruauté et la brutalité des atrocités perpétrées par les nazis. Nous avons tous la responsabilité solennelle de nous souvenir de ceux qui ont péri durant la Shoah, de rendre hommage aux survivants et d’apprendre d’eux, et d’enseigner aux futures générations les horreurs de l’Holocauste. Nous devons tirer des leçons de ce sombre chapitre de l’histoire afin d’éviter que de tels événements ne se reproduisent. Au cours de la dernière année, le Canada a conservé son statut de chef de file mondial en matière de commémoration de l’Holocauste en tant que président de l’Alliance internationale pour la mémoire de l’Holocauste (AIMH). Nous continuerons de collaborer étroitement avec l’AIMH afin de promouvoir la sensibilisation et la recherche au sujet de l’Holocauste, de même que sa commémoration, et de lutter contre l’antisémitisme dans le monde entier.
