….Toda’s Diary from Human Revolution…. This was written by Sensei Josei Toda before he met Sensei Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, right before he (Toda) took faith. From the Human Revolution Volume 2, page 238-239. quote One day he ( Josei Toda) wrote the following, in his diary: April 1, 1920. A month has passed since my coming to Tokyo. A month is short compared with the fifty years of human life, but the spiritual development achieved in this past month has been far greater than that of the past twenty years of my life. Ponder deeply; I am a young man. I must be entrusted with a great task, and I mustn’t forget to train my body and mind. I must polish the body and mind that will carry out this great task as an asset to the nation as a leader of the world. I must perfect myself this way. Unsure of my ability, I can only struggle to the utmost. Putting all else aside, all I have to do is to study hard, taking no count of peoples slander or mockery. All thats necessary is to accomplish the ultimate purpose, committing myself solely to the power of faith. Check points of self-improvement 1) Am I studying hard? 2) Am I praying for my parents happiness? 3) Am I restraining my small, self-centered desires, regarding myself instead as a citizen of the world, and of the Japanese nation? 4) Am I magnanimous? 5) Am I careful not to waste time? 6) Am I sincere? The lonely twenty-year-old, Josei Toda, wrote this diary in the dim electric light of his lodging in Tokyo. He could only live ambitiously, with hope for the future. He placed all priority on his self-development. The time of his youth was something that young people from good families, who inherited fortune from their parents, could hardly experience. Even if they were to become the leaders of society on the basis of their inheritance, they could hardly understand the minds of those who have known great suffering. unquote
