[Trigger Warning: Excessive PDA] Maybe some of you Internet stars have heard about the South Side Weekly, a Chicago publication that distributes >2.7 million pages of content across the South Side each year and gets made by a handful of people in a Dursley-sized broom closet. This week, the Weekly may have produced its best regular issue ever. Lauren Gurley reported the hell out of Cafe Jumping Bean and the journalists who frequent it; Osita Nwanevu provided some of the citys only coverage of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District; Christian Belanger profiled political consultant Delmarie Cobb; Emily Holland took on VICE and Chiraq; Cindy Dapogny wrote a crazy-good review of Court Theatres new show; Arman Sayani wrote a crazy-good review of up-and-coming musician Via Rosas new mixtape; Rachel Schastok sang an ode to Tim Samuelson and Bronzevilles Mecca Flats. And, oh yeah, Patrick Leow and Meaghan Murphy told you everything you need to know about Chicagos most important primary, the 26th District face-off between Christian Mitchell and Jay Travis. This is all one week after Josh Kovensky reported on the imminent closure of Chicagos last remaining public mental health clinics—maybe the most important breaking-news story the Weeklys ever published. But CORRECTION: The Weekly is indeed made in a broom closet, but its also made by more than a handful of people. Viz. the most sedulous, committed, and articulate writers/editors at the UofC (apologies to our friends at the Scarlet Letter), as well as the best publisher around (sorry Newcity, youre not the only locally owned and operated cultural weekly [sic] in Chicago). All of which is to say: Keep your eyes on Bea Malsky and the South Side Weekly crew. Building on an eleven-year legacy of long-form, theyre just getting started.
