#TriviaTuesday This is the replica third order Fresnel lens that sits in the lantern room of the South Manitou Island lighthouse! Perhaps you have seen it in person, either from the shore or on a tour of the tower? The original third order lens was installed in the then brand new tower in 1871. The United States Coast Guard ceased staffing the light in 1958 and it sat, dark and abandoned for half a century. In 2009, through several successful partnerships, the South Manitou Island Light was re-lit! You can now see it shine every year from May through October!
