SMD INTRODUCTION: There is growing anger among Muslims in Nigeria towards the publication of perceived blasphemous cartoons by the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo. The publication has received a fair amount of publicity in local print and electronic as well as social media and has engendered discussions as well as calls in some quarters for Muslims to protest the perceived blasphemous publication on Friday January 16, 2015. It will be recalled that the first publication engendered terror attacks on the magazine office in Paris, France that led to the killing of 17 persons. In its reaction to the publication, the Islamist insurgent group, Boko Haram in a statement by its leader Imam Abubakar Shekau released through a video on January 14, 2015 renounced the Charlie Hebdo cartoon. The statement praised the attacks that killed 17 people and condemned the French government. Purpose The purpose of this note is to inform all personnel of this growing anger amongst Muslims in Nigeria over the Charlie Hebdo cartoons and the possibility of protests on Friday January 16, 2015. Advice All personnel should avoid movement during Friday prayer time, which is usually between 1230 – 1430 hrs. Personnel are also advised to avoid locations associated with the French including restaurants and other businesses and institutions such as schools which may be the target of this anger.
