[ UPDATE ] CHARLESTOWN, IN — A plan to “demolish a working-class neighborhood” and pass the land off to a private commercial developer has failed. At the city council meeting on December 8th, 2014, Mayor Bob Hall made a motion to have a vote on the project. No council member seconded the motion. The project is effectively dead. Twenty vacant homes will be demolished, but the rest of the 354-home community will be spared. “My home’s not for sale at any price,” homeowner Jason Petrone said. “The only way I’m moving from Pleasant Ridge is if a sheriff comes with an eviction notice.” Thanks to those who wrote the council and applied pressure against the project, hundreds of people get to stay in their homes.
